Commercial gyms are not going anywhere

It has been a tough time for gym owners and gym goers. Lockdowns forced us into our homes and lots of people called this the death of gyms. We saw a surge in sales of home gym equipment, lots of workout at home apps and plans, etc. A lot of it is just fad. I don’t think commercial gyms are going anywhere. Here’s why:

There is not enough space.

Yeah that pretty much summarizes it all but let’s discuss this. You go to a proper gym you have access to enough space and equipment to do a variety of exercises you want. Lots of flexibility, machines, free weights, treadmills etc. You just can’t get that at home. Sure you can adjust. Some may even have space. But it is hard and you just don’t get that same effect. You worry about the floor, cleaning, etc. etc. With a commercial gym, you have a dedicated space and time slot. You can go hang out with people who will push you to the limit and trainers who will check you in person. Sometimes, having a group helps. With online fad apps, you don’t get that. Most of these are poorly designed and without proper equipment, you won’t get in a proper workout that is optimized for the long run. You want access to good equipment that gives flexibility, not glorified home cardio workouts. Not that gym trainers would be gods, but you definitely want access to equipment for getting in best shape possible. It is how it is. For most of us, we won’t have access to enough equipment, space or knowledge. Getting a properly designed workout that covers everything is hard at home.

Most people I know who are serious about lifting are itching to get back and go at it in full intensity. It is fun. I hope we get gyms to open again soon. Lifting is a religion to many of us.

Commercial gyms are not going anywhere.
